Officials with the Economic Growth Connection of Westmoreland County say the region is on track for growth in the coming year, with the expansion of high-speed internet access a top priority.

Connection President and CEO Jim Smith, addressing the economic development group’s annual meeting last week via Zoom, said events such as the online gathering coupled with the growing demands of workers left to work from home during the pandemic, have only served to underscore the importance of broadband access.

Capital idea: With influx of cash, VidMob plans to double Pittsfield workforce | Business

PITTSFIELD — VidMob, which provides video ad content for social media platforms, is expecting to almost double the 30 employees it has in Pittsfield, after closing on an additional $50 million in expansion capital from investors that include influential high-tech companies like Adobe and Shutterstock.

The engineering department of VidMob, which is based in New York City, is located on the top floor of the Crawford Square building on North Street. VidMob added seven employees to its Pittsfield operations last year, and expects to double the current number over the next 12 months. The company has 150 employees.

NORRISTOWN, PA — The monumental power failure in Texas caused by unseasonable cold showed how extreme weather can push an electric grid to the brink.

The average U.S. power customer loses electricity for 1.5 to 2 hours annually even before extreme weather events are taken into account, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. As the Texas experience showed, hurricanes, snowstorms, heat waves and other extreme weather events can make such outages dramatically worse.
