Business owner overcomes past jail time, now runs thriving business

Marquis McKenzie, 30, said he’s living proof that anyone can overcome past mistakes and that second chances are real.

The father of three is now a successful business owner and nonprofit founder, who also advocates for returning citizens who once made mistakes like he did.

McKenzie was arrested at 15-years-old and spent two years behind bars for armed robbery.  He told News 6 he’s not letting his conviction override his passion. He said he wants his story to be motivation for his own kids, and also for teens and juvenile offenders.

Retailers eyeing Linda Dresner space, other Birmingham properties

Dresner, who 28 years ago opened her namesake downtown shop on West Maple Road, announced the closure earlier this week. The shop is in a desirable spot, called one of the gateways to downtown Birmingham by Southfield-based real estate broker Angela Thomas.

Robert Gibbs, managing principal of Birmingham-based Gibbs Planning Group, said he’s aware of a dozen of the “most sought-after fashion, home furnishings, children’s and specialty lifestyle retailers” focusing on opening flagship stores in downtown Birmingham.

“… and I expect the Dresner building to have multiple opportunities to land such a store,” Gibbs said.

Egypt negotiates with India, China to manufacture coronavirus vaccines

CAIRO – 28 February 2021: Egypt is negotiating with India and China to manufacture coronavirus vaccines, said Dr. Noha Assem, the advisor to the Minister of Health, told “Men Al Kahera” talk show on “Sky News Arabia” on Saturday.


She added that Egypt has passed the peak of the second wave of the infection, noting that the situation in Egypt is better than in other countries.

AT&T spins DirecTV into new company after losing customers

The telecom company will receive $7.8 billion in cash, including $1.8 billion from TPG and and $5.8 billion from the new DirecTV firm, which is borrowing that sum.

NEW YORK — AT&T is spinning off its DirecTV into a new company for a fraction of the $48.5 billion it paid for the satellite TV service in 2015. DirecTV has lost millions of customers on AT&T’s watch, and is valued in the deal at just $16.25 billion, including debt.

Private equity firm TPG will own 30% of the business, while AT&T holds the rest. The telecom company will receive $7.8 billion
